SUN VALLEY : Groundbreaking for Pool Work Delayed
Residents who have waited nearly four years for renovation of the swimming pool at the Sun Valley Recreation Center learned Thursday that they must wait a little longer: A ceremonial groundbreaking for the pool’s refurbishing was canceled because of rain.
Officials said they have not yet rescheduled the event.
The 66-year-old pool was closed in the summer of 1991 because of safety concerns, but will receive a $1.2-million overhaul paid for with Proposition A recreation funds approved by voters in 1992.
The project includes construction of a new pool shell, filter system and deck. The locker rooms will be rebuilt with roofs, but the central two-story building that includes the lobby, manager’s office and upstairs recreation room will remain.
Work is scheduled to take about 10 months.
When the Sun Valley pool was open, it attracted several thousand swimmers annually.
The nearest city pool to Sun Valley is about 2 1/2 miles away at Fernangeles Recreation Center, 8851 Laurel Canyon Blvd.
