Schools : Education news : COUNTYWIDE: Scholarships Offered at 10 High Schools
The ninth annual Spectrum Leadership Awards scholarship competition is open to all college-bound high school seniors with at least a 3.0 grade-point average.
Students from any of these 10 high schools may apply: Irvine, University, Woodbridge, Corona del Mar, Newport Harbor, Costa Mesa, Estancia, Foothill, Laguna Beach and Tustin.
A boy and girl from each high school will receive $1,000 scholarships. The selected students will also compete for additional scholarships. Eight semifinalists will receive an additional $2,000 each, and four finalists will be awarded $3,000 each.
Applications are available at high school counseling offices. The application deadline is Wednesday.
TUSTIN: Adult School Class Program Announced
A variety of personal development and vocational courses will be offered by the Tustin Unified School District’s in its spring semester adult education program.
The classes include keyboarding and typewriting, math, science, economics, psychology, American history and citizenship. French, German and Spanish classes also will be offered, as well as English as a second language.
Brochures describing the program can be obtained from the Adult Education office at Guin Foss School, 18492 Vanderlip Ave., from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Information: (714) 730-7395.
LOS ALAMITOS: Computers, Money for Books Donated
The Los Alamitos Unified School District recently received nearly $5,000 in donations and computer equipment from several groups and local companies.
The school district regularly receives such gifts, but district officials said donations are needed now more than ever because of the district’s financial difficulties. More than $12 million of the district’s money is tied up in the county’s bankruptcy.
Among the donations were $2,400 from the Lee Elementary School PTA, which will be used to buy books, and $2,000 from the Grace Lutheran Church for Los Alamitos High School’s Human Relations Task Force.
Resident Lorrie Willey has donated a computer, a color monitor and a keyboard for the science lab at Los Alamitos High School.
FULLERTON: State School Board Lauds RSVP Program
Fullerton High School has won a Golden Bell Award for its Restructuring Social Science Via Progressive (RSVP) Technology program.
The award was recently given to the school by the California School Board Foundation.
The program uses computer to help with school lessons and activities.
