A two-alarm fire Thursday caused at least $275,000 in damage to a vacant building near Ocean View High School, fire officials said.
No one was injured in the blaze, and neither the high school nor nearby homes were threatened, said Martha Werth, public information officer for the Huntington Beach Fire Department.
Werth said that three rooms in the building, at 17200 Golden West St., were gutted and that 15 others sustained smoke damage.
The cause of the fire was still under investigation.
The building, which is about 500 yards from the main part of the high school campus, was scheduled to open next year as an independent study facility, where teachers would help students return to or catch up in their classes, said David Hagen, superintendent of the Huntington Beach Union High School District.
Hagen said district officials have not yet decided whether the building is still suitable as a study facility.
The fire was reported shortly after 8 a.m., Werth said. It took 48 firefighters from Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley about an hour to put it out.
