One of two people killed in a stolen car that crashed into a tree minutes after Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies gave up a rush-hour chase was identified Wednesday as a San Bernardino teen-ager.

Armando Castaneda, 17, died at the scene Tuesday night at Los Robles Avenue and Turnbull Canyon Road, said coroner’s spokesman Scott Carrier. The name of the man at the wheel of the mangled 1993 Honda Accord was withheld.

“We already had stopped our pursuit of the car for traffic safety reasons, due to rush-hour traffic,” said Sgt. Bob Blanks of the City of Industry sheriff’s substation.

Witnesses said the car was going extremely fast when the crash occurred.
