DOWNEY : Police, Firefighters Win Pay Increases

The City Council has approved 10% pay increases in two stages for police officers and firefighters.
Police received an 8% pay increase early last month, and firefighters will receive an 8% increase Friday. Both groups will receive an additional 2% in July. Base salaries for top-ranking patrol officers will go from $3,669 a month to $4,035 a month when the entire 10% is added. Base pay for top firefighters will go from $3,302 to $3,632 a month.
The agreements capped eight months of negotiations. The new contracts expire in June, 1996.
Andy Doyle, president of the Downey Firemen’s Assn., said firefighters had requested an 18% raise and better benefits. “We see it is a step in the right direction, but we still have a ways to go,” Doyle said.
