BASEBALL : Negotiations May Resume Next Week
- Share via
Acting Commissioner Bud Selig said Thursday that bargaining talks with the baseball players’ union might resume next week, and Baltimore Oriole owner Peter Angelos again attacked the plan to use replacement players for striking major leaguers.
After meeting with American League counsel William Schweitzer, Angelos released a statement, saying the Orioles have “an obligation to refrain from participating in an activity which will justifiably visit public condemnation on our great game to the irreparable damage of this franchise.”
Angelos also said the full ownership still has to vote on the replacement concept and he will urge colleagues to reconsider their apparent support for it.
Selig confirmed that at some point, all 28 clubs will have to vote on the use of replacements but did not know when that would be. A management source said it would be a shock if the majority voted it down.
The replacement issue would prove academic if there is a bargaining settlement. The sides have not negotiated since Dec. 22.
