SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO : Helicopter Service Contract Approved
The City Council has approved an $11,520 contract for police helicopter services through June 30.
The council voted unanimously Tuesday to use services provided by Airborne Law Enforcement Services, a joint-powers agency including the Sheriff’s Department and police departments of Newport Beach, Costa Mesa and Huntington Beach.
Helicopters used during emergency calls can aid patrol cars by offering better visibility and safety, said Paul Sullivan, chief of police services for San Juan Capistrano.
City Councilwoman Collene Campbell said she was impressed with how effective the helicopters are in helping track and catch suspects.
“I know I sure want them on board if I have a problem at my house,” Campbell said.
Under the contract, San Juan Capistrano will pay an average of $120 per service call.
Airborne Law Enforcement Services has a minimum of two helicopters in the air at all times, and two others ready to go, Sullivan said.
In a report to the council, Sullivan said Airborne Law Enforcement Services does not expect any changes in funding because of the county’s financial troubles.
