SAN DIEGO--Observe the California gray whales making their southward migration. Two-hour whale-watching cruises on Jan. 21, 22, 28, 29, Feb. 4 and 5 depart from Seaforth Sportfishing, 1717 Quivira Road. Naturalists from the Stephen Birch Aquarium-Museum of Scripps Institution of Oceanography join the trips to discuss the behavior and natural history of the gentle giants. Departures are at 9 and 11:30 a.m. (On Jan. 28 there is a third trip at 2 p.m.; on Jan. 29 there is only a 9 a.m. trip.) SAN JOSE--The Vietnamese New Year Tet Festival is Jan. 27-29 at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds, 344 Tully Road. Highlights include traditional ceremonies, Vietnamese food and crafts, an international table tennis tournament, martial arts, a photography exhibit and performances on six stages. 6-10 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m.-midnight Saturday; 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Sunday. $5, general; $2, children. SONOMA COUNTY--Local wine, food and hospitality is offered in abundance during the third annual Winter Wineland, Feb. 3-5. Participating in the celebration are 54 wineries and 26 inns throughout the Alexander, Dry Creek and Russian River valleys. Tastings, tours, demonstrations and talks are among the activities offered during self-guided tours of these areas, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday-Sunday ($15 for both days). CALISTOGA--The Napa Valley Mustard Celebration brings a feast for the eyes, ears and palate to the Napa County Fairgrounds, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Feb. 11-12. Mustard is the star ingredient in the many culinary offerings. Also featured: arts and crafts and other entertainment. $8, general; $3, kids under 12.
