BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : GIRLS
Maybe the Garfield High girls’ basketball team wasn’t so lucky after all.
A week after beating cross-town rival Roosevelt for the first time since 1989, the Bulldogs ended a three-year losing streak to Jefferson with 54-30 victory over the Democrats in a Southeastern Conference game Friday at Garfield.
Garfield, eight underclassmen including two freshmen, is 6-0 in conference in its bid for its first league title in nine seasons.
“I think we’ve surprised a lot of people,” said forward Miriam Gonzalez, one of only three seniors on the team. “We’re young and we’re still developing. I think the difference this year is everybody gets along and works together.”
Gonzalez had nine points, 16 rebounds and six assists. Freshman Karina Chavez scored 12 points and Monica Abundis contributed 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Records: Jefferson 9-4; Garfield 10-2.
