In the early part of the century, one of the county’s most infamous landmarks was at an Irvine intersection where Highway 101, Trabuco Road and Culver Drive came together.
The dusty intersection, known as Culver’s Corner, was considered the deadliest intersection in the county. It was the site of numerous collisions, according to the book “Irvine.”
Just beyond the intersection stood a house owned by the Culvers, a well-known farming family. People injured in accidents were taken to the home for care until doctors arrived. Mable Culver, the daughter of family head Fredrick Culver, actually married a man whose mother died in a head-on collision at the corner.
