ANAHEIM HILLS — An Orange County deputy marshal trying to serve an arrest warrant on an assault suspect shot the man at his front door Thursday following a scuffle, police said. Tyrone Mathews, 40, was shot in the stomach at 9:30 a.m. at his home in the 4800 block of East Maychelle Drive, Police Lt. Vince Howard said. Mathews, who was wanted on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, was in stable condition at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana.
Paramedics treated the marshal, whom police would not identify, for minor injuries.
Howard would not say whether Mathews was armed, but said the marshal’s injuries did not result from a gunshot.
“The incident is still under investigation,” he said.
As with all officer-involved shootings, the Orange County district attorney’s office is conducting an investigation.
