Amanda Selby
SCHOOL: Harvard-Westlake
YEAR: Senior
SEASON AT A GLANCE: Selby, a 6-foot-2 middle blocker, began the season wanting another chance at the State playoffs after an ankle injury prematurely ended her 1993 season. Selby led the Wolverines to the Mission League title despite having to work with two setters due to injuries. Harvard-Westlake advanced to the Southern Section Division II semifinals, upsetting two higher-seeded teams before losing to Long Beach Millikan, the eventual champion. The Wolverines also defeated La Jolla in the first round of the Division III state playoffs. Last month, Selby made a verbal commitment to play volleyball at UCLA.
THE REST OF THE TEAM:
Lauren Brownson, Louisville, Sr., led the Royals to the second round of the Southern Section Division III playoffs. Connie Chae, Van Nuys, Sr., helped the Wolves to an undefeated regular season. Darcie Frazier, L.A. Baptist, Sr., was named to the Southern Section Division V team and reached the section final. Jennifer Hodges, Chatsworth, Sr., led the City Section 4-A champions in kills and blocks in the playoffs. Kara McKeown, Newbury Park, Sr., helped upset Marmonte League champion Agoura in an early season match. Christy Russell, Burroughs, Jr., was named player of the year in the Foothill League. Jami Sawyer, Nordhoff, Sr., was selected to the Southern Section Division IV team. Kristin Scott, Thousand Oaks, Sr., transferred from Simi Valley and helped the Lancers gain a berth in the Southern Section Division I playoffs. Blair Thomas, Agoura, Sr., was named Marmonte League player of the year and led the Chargers to the State tournament.
