AT&T; Buys On-Line Service: The company broadened its role in the computer on-line services business by purchasing Interchange Network Co. from Ziff-Davis Publishing Co. The companies did not disclose the value of the deal, but analysts estimated AT&T; Corp. paid between $50 million and $100 million. AT&T; said the cost was not material, which means it was less than 5% of annual earnings, or $200 million. The Interchange on-line service is to begin operation in the spring with electronic versions of the Washington Post and Minneapolis Star-Tribune among its initial products. The transaction is the last major asset sale by Ziff-Davis, a family-run company that once included influential computer industry publications, marketing and trade show firms.
