Soccer Player Held in Stabbing of Fan in Encino
ENCINO — A soccer player angered by a taunting fan during a match at Balboa Park on Sunday morning stabbed the man before he was subdued by fans and players from both teams, authorities said.
Carlos Macias, 28, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after allegedly stabbing the spectator once in the chest after the match, Los Angeles Police Lt. Anthony Alba said.
Macias was subdued by fans and other players from both teams after the stabbing and was held until police arrived, Alba said. Macias was hit in the face with a brick by one of his pursuers, Alba said.
He was treated for minor injuries and then booked into the Men’s Central Jail.
The victim, Laurencio Betancoort, 30, of Van Nuys, was in fair condition at Northridge Hospital Medical Center, Alba said.
