Taft High tennis player Julia Feldman has developed a more aggressive game that might help her strike the target at which she has aimed for three years: the City Section girls’ singles championship.

Feldman, a senior, and defending champion Kendra Segura of Dorsey will square off at 1:30 p.m. today at The Racquet Centre.

Feldman has a 47-2 record in three seasons, her losses coming to former teammate Brahna Pastorini in the 1992 final and to Segura in the 1993 semifinals. But Feldman returned this year with a powerful serve and a new serve-and-volley attack that has overwhelmed most opponents.

But can she avenge her 6-3, 6-3 loss to Segura, a sophomore who also has improved?

“I’m just going out there to play my game, and I think my game is enough to win,” Feldman said. “I’m excited. I’m looking forward to it.”

In Wednesday’s semifinals, Feldman had four aces, several service winners and narrowly missed several more aces in her 6-4, 6-3 victory over Los Angeles High freshman Ilona Kordonskay. Segura turned back Dorsey teammate Delana Daniels, 6-4, 6-2, after trailing, 4-3, in the first set.

An unheralded player last year, Segura dealt defending champion Pastorini her only high school loss, a 6-7 (7-2), 6-2, 6-3 marathon.

But if Feldman’s serves are on target, Segura could be in trouble.
