Fullerton : Young Cyclists Can Get $10 Helmet Discounts

In an effort to get bicyclists younger than 18 to wear helmets, the Police Department and two local bicycle shops are offering $10 discount coupons for the headgear.
Police passed out the coupons at schools throughout the city to encourage parents to buy the helmets for their children. Beginning Jan. 1, police said, they will cite any youngster riding a bicycle without a helmet. The citation will carry a fine that has yet to be set by the courts.
The average price of a helmet is $20, and the shops offering the $10 discounts are JAX Bicycle Center, 2520 E. Chapman Ave., and Mulrooney’s Fullerton Bicycle, 424 E. Commonwealth Ave.
State law requires bicycle riders or passengers younger than 18 to wear helmets approved by the U.S. Department of Transportation. The law took effect last Jan. 1 but local police have not issued tickets.
Approved helmets have a stickers with “DOT,” “ANSI” or “SNELL” written on them, authorities said. For more information about the bicycle helmet law, call the Police Department at (714) 738-3153.
