PREP SOCCER ROUNDUP : Edison, Santa Margarita Open Girls’ Season With 0-0 Tie
- Share via
Edison came out strong, lost two defenders to injuries and then had to hold on for a 0-0 tie with Santa Margarita in a nonleague girls’ soccer game Tuesday at Edison High.
The Chargers (0-0-1), who reached the quarterfinals in the playoffs last season, looked like the stronger team early in the game as Shauna Itri and Laura Lamb each had good scoring chances.
However, Itri left the game midway through the first half with a knee injury after colliding with Santa Margarita goalkeeper Riki Ann Serrins.
Minutes later, fullback Lehua Simmons left with a ankle sprain and the Chargers didn’t threaten the rest of the way.
Santa Margarita (0-0-1), which finished seventh in Division I last season, had several good scoring opportunities in the second half but either missed the net or misplayed the ball.
Twice in the last 12 minutes, Kristen Rowe freed herself in the penalty box, but the first shot hit the post and the other was saved by goalkeeper Allie Nadler.
Then with five minutes left, an Eagle corner kick sailed over the head of Nadler but no Santa Margarita player was nearby to tap in the ball.
The Eagles had one more chance when Kenzie Katibian sent her shot toward the top left corner, but Nadler stretched out to make the save.
