Supermarket, Meat Industries Seek to Stop E. Coli Testing: The industries sued the U.S. Agriculture Department to halt government testing of the ground-beef supply for the rare but potentially deadly bacteria E. coli O157:H7. The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Austin, Tex., claims the testing, which began Oct. 17, would mislead consumers into believing any ground beef they bought would be free of pathogens. The plaintiffs did not ask for an immediate injunction, so it could be several weeks before U.S. District Judge James Nowlin acts.
