LAGUNA BEACH — Nineteen people spent the night in Laguna Beach’s city jail after being stopped late Saturday and early Sunday at a field sobriety checkpoint and arrested on suspicion of drunk driving, police said.
About 1,300 motorists passed through the checkpoint set up on eastbound lanes of the 20000 block of Laguna Canyon Road between 10 p.m. Saturday and 2:30 a.m. Sunday, said Sgt. Mike Hall of the Laguna Beach Police Department.
A total of 1,084 motorists were stopped, questioned and given an informational brochure and 38 of them were given a field sobriety test, Hall said. Of the 19 drivers who failed the test and were arrested, 14 were men and five were women, Hall said.
The suspected drunk drivers were released starting at 7 a.m. Sunday, a department spokesman said.
