Parents’ Opinions Are Highly Valued

I am a candidate for the Huntington Beach Union High School District Governing Board. An article “PTA Surveys Candidates in 22 School District Races (Oct. 24),” misquoted me in a particularly serious way. The misquote, in the context it was presented, leads the reader to think that I have chosen a childless lifestyle, don’t respect parental opinions, and may have some hidden agenda for running for school board.
None of this is true. In fact, the indirect quote is the exact opposite of my stated situation. That is, I am childless through circumstances beyond my control--not my choice.
This quote was in response to a bluntly phrased question: What schools do your children attend, or did they attend if they are out of school? Anyone who knows me, knows that my status as a single person is a great regret in my life.
Furthermore, parental involvement in the schools system in one of my campaign issues. I am in favor of much more respect for parents than we currently have.
My answer, when read in its entirety, states that I believe parental involvement “is highly desired at all levels” within the system, but I also believe that the broader community needs and deserves a voice.
