Preseason Make-Over : It’s not too early to redo furniture to prepare for holidays.

I love to do my holiday shopping between Thanksgiving and Christmas when the stores are bright with lights and festive with decorations. That’s part of the fun. So, for me, it’s too early to start now. But now is the time to prepare home for the upcoming holiday season.

It’s certainly not too soon to have the dining room chairs recovered, or get a slipcover made for the sofa. Hal David Interiors has excellent workmanship and some of the best prices in town. For a standard seven-foot sofa, the cost is $299 for either a slipcover or a reupholstery job. To reupholster a standard dining chair, figure $35 each. A small but select stock of fabrics are available at heavily discounted prices. Tapestries that retail for around $40 a yard are between $15 and $20, and a Schumacher print that retails for $25 sells here for $9.95. Pick up and delivery are free.

Should you need more fabrics to choose from, Home Beautiful has some excellent buys on damasks, so popular today for that rumpled look in upholstered pieces. A 62-inch wide machine-washable (55% cotton and 45% polyester) damask that retails for $24 to $30 a yard is $12.98. An imported damask that retails for close to $100 and sells at another fabric discounter for $50 a yard can be purchased for $30.

If your windows need a lift, Stern’s Draperies has ready-made drapes in antique satin, 105 inches wide by 84 inches long, for $50. But it’s in the custom-made draperies that Stern’s shines. One San Fernando Valley company gave a recent customer an estimate of $1,000 for a drapery job that Stern’s quoted at $350.

It’s a good idea to get at least two estimates on custom draperies, and J.P. Discount Fabrics & Draperies also is known for quality work at a low cost. It, too, carries some ready-mades at good prices. In a commercial-grade polyester, a drape measuring 40 by 44 inches is $20, and a 64-by-94-inch drape is $44.
