A government minister resigned after admitting he accepted payoffs from the prestigious Harrods department store, plunging the Conservative government into a new corruption scandal. Northern Ireland Minister Tim Smith and Trade and Industry Minister Neil Hamilton were accused of taking money to plant questions in Parliament that would benefit Harrods’ owner. Hamilton has denied taking payoffs and intends to stay in office, Prime Minister John Major said.
