A 19-year-old Reseda man who had bragged to friends about killing a Winnetka man surrendered to authorities Wednesday at the Downtown Criminal Courts Building, Los Angeles police said.

Jason Matthew Gustanski, 18, was booked on suspicion of murder in the Sept. 19 shooting death of Edward Michael Garner, 21, said Detective Rick Swanston of the West Valley Division.

“He was identified as the killer after he had bragged to several of his acquaintances,” said Swanston.

Police said they believe the two men met at a 7-Eleven store in Winnetka last month. Gustanski then lured Garner into an alley in the 6700 block of Mason Avenue with a promise to sell Garner drugs, shot him several times in the head and took his wallet, police said.

A resident on his way to work the next morning found Garner’s body near his driveway.

At the time of Garner’s death, the alley was the subject of a police narcotics investigation, Swanston said. They said they believed drugs were being sold there.

Gustanski was being held without bail at the West Valley Division Jail, police said.
