CANOGA PARK : Quake-Hit Library to Get Make-Over

With reference books that date back to the 1950s and quake damage to worry about, the library at Canoga Park Elementary School is badly in need of a make-over.

Now the library looks like it’s going to get one.

Wonder of Reading, a nonprofit group based in Los Angeles, will soon begin working with Pacific Theatres’ Hooked on Reading project to deliver their version of the Three Rs: reading, renovating and restocking.

Next week, Canoga Park teachers will be meeting with the program director of Wonder of Reading to discuss how to remodel the school’s library and what reading materials they would like to see in the collection. The school will receive $10,000 just to purchase books and software.

It is unclear how much will be spent on the entire project.

Canoga Park Principal Barbara Gutierrez said her staff is considering devoting part of the library collection to Spanish-language books.

The revamping of Canoga Park Elementary’s library is the fifth project that Pacific Theatres has taken on. The movie theater company has set a goal of helping one or two schools a year.
