PaineWebber Reportedly Eyeing Full Kidder Bid: PaineWebber Group Inc. held talks last week to acquire all of Kidder, Peabody & Co., PaineWebber employees familiar with the negotiations said. The employees, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the preliminary discussions were broader than those held earlier this month on buying only Kidder’s brokerage unit. PaineWebber, the nation’s fifth-largest securities firm, would increase its staff of brokers, traders and bankers by purchasing Kidder. General Electric Co., Kidder’s parent, is trying to sell its brokerage unit, which has lost more than $300 million this year amid declines in the bond market and a bond trading scandal.
