PREP EXTRA / SATURDAY FOOTBALL PULLOUT : Montgomery Leads Troy by Estancia
FULLERTON — Troy used a potent running game and strong defense to end Estancia’s three-game winning streak with a 31-0 nonleague victory Friday night at Fullerton High School.
Junior Larry Montgomery ran for 107 yards and four touchdowns and senior Ryl Relatores added 135 rushing yards for the Warriors (4-1).
The Warriors’ defense forced five turnovers, including three fumbles, and held Estancia (3-2) to 41 passing yards.
“This was a nice ballgame for us just before league,” Troy Coach John Turek said. “We believe our defense is good, but we’ve played some real good running backs this season. The defense really needed this game.”
Troy dominated the first half. After stalling on their opening drive, the Warriors got a 37-yard field goal from Eric Urban midway through the opening quarter.
Montgomery then took over. He scored on runs of four, one and 18 yards before halftime, giving the Warriors a 23-0 halftime lead.
The Eagles’ best scoring opportunity of the half came on the final drive, but they were stopped when time expired before the field goal unit could set up.
The Warriors wasted little time in the third quarter. Montgomery capped the scoring during the fifth play of the quarter with his fourth touchdown on a 31-yard run.
The defense forced two fumbles in the third quarter and Mike Critchfield intercepted Frough Jahid’s pass to stop the Eagles’ best scoring opportunity of the second half.
Jahid finished with 128 yards in 17 carries and completed three of 12 passes for 41 yards with two interceptions.
