Haunted by the fact that it had scored in only two of its last 12 quarters, Verdugo Hills High additionally faced the specter of Arlin Slayton on Friday afternoon.
Wilson High’s junior tailback rushed for 244 yards in 17 carries and scored three touchdowns to lead the Mules to a 42-0 romp over the Dons in a Northern Conference game at Verdugo Hills.
Of Slayton’s 17 carries, 12 netted 11 yards or more. Slayton scored on runs of 16, 18 and 47 yards.
The Dons, (0-3-2 overall, 0-1-1 in conference play), who last week tied Belmont, 0-0, have gone nine quarters without scoring. Their best chance came in the third quarter Friday, when quarterback David Kelly (80 yards in 10 carries) appeared to score on an 80-yard run. However, the play was called back because of a clipping penalty.
Kelly had three passes intercepted, two by Buster Bradley, who returned the second 69 yards for a touchdown.
A safety and Slayton’s first touchdown gave Wilson (4-1, 2-0) a 9-0 lead at halftime.
