CALABASAS : City Opens New Tennis, Pool Facility

This fall, two familiar words may be echoing down the canyons of Calabasas more than before: “Tennis, anyone?”
After years of disrepair, a former private club was dedicated Wednesday as the new Edmund D. Edelman Tennis and Swim Center, at 23400 Park Sorrento.
The facility, now owned by the city of Calabasas, caught the attention of county Supervisor Edelman in 1991, when Edelman learned that the property’s owners hoped to replace the facility with a condominium complex.
Instead, Edelman worked with city officials to secure funding to purchase and rehabilitate the center for public use. He obtained $1.5 million from a settlement with the developers of the nearby Baldwin development project, plus an additional $672,000 in state park and recreation funds.
The new facility boasts 14 tennis courts and an Olympic-size swimming pool. Grass and clay courts are under consideration for the future.
