AND ONE MORE THING: How can radio play a song that has a key phrase--not to mention a title--that can’t be said on radio? That’s the pertinent question as Interscope Records has released a radio-only sampler from the “Natural Born Killers” soundtrack album featuring L7’s song “S---list.”
Lynn McDonnell, alternative promotions representative at Interscope, admits that only some college stations may play the song, at least without bleeping the offending word. “We’re not going to sit here and tell people to play it,” says McDonnell, who says the radio release was just meant to give programmers some selections drawn from the 27 songs on the album.
Gene Sandbloom, assistant programming director at KROQ, says it’s unlikely at this point the song will find its way into the station’s playlist. “We never say never around here and we’ve edited some pretty impossible songs in order to play them,” says Sandbloom. “But we’re not fans of editing.”
KROQ is playing another “NBK” selection, though: The Cowboy Junkies’ version of “Sweet Jane,” which in this version includes bits of dialogue from the movie.*
