DENVER — Guy Hebert is still the only Mighty Duck with his own ESPN SportsCenter highlight, but he has competition for the No. 1 goaltending job.
Mikhail Shtalenkov played the whole way in the Ducks’ 1-1 tie with San Jose in a neutral-site exhibition at McNichols Arena on Wednesday, and the goal he allowed was one Coach Ron Wilson said he would have questioned if there had been video-replay capability.
“I respect Mike as much as I do Guy,” Wilson said. “Whoever plays best will be in there. Mike established himself last year and from here out, they’ll be alternated to see who starts opening night.
“If one’s not clearly better than the other, I’ll maybe 1-A and 1-B them.”
Rookie Paul Kariya was held pointless but set up some outstanding scoring chances.
Peter Douris scored for the Ducks (0-2-1), who play their first home exhibition Sunday against Vancouver.
