California IN BRIEF : PINYON PINES : Firefighters Expect to Contain Blaze

Fire crews had the end of a weeklong battle in sight, expecting that today they will encircle a mountain wildfire that destroyed 12 houses and five mobile homes south of Palm Springs. Authorities said they expected to have the 19,600-acre blaze contained by tonight and virtually extinguished by Sunday night, said Karen McKinley, a U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman. Meanwhile, a 10,000-acre fire 60 miles to the northwest in the San Bernardino National Forest was only 25% ringed by firebreaks Wednesday, but its movement northeast was slowing.
