Cuban Crackdown Targets Suspected Profiteers: Cuban authorities are investigating hundreds of people suspected of getting rich illegally. The authorities are confiscating houses, cars and money as a precaution, state prosecutor Juan Escalona said. Escalona, quoted by the state news agency AIN, described a crackdown, on black marketeers among others, that began with the passing of a law in May providing for confiscation of goods and money from people profiting from Cuba’s current severe economic crisis. Property may be returned later if suspects can prove they acquired them by legal means.
