SAUGUS — Tempers flared following the Sportsman main event Saturday night at Saugus Speedway and as a result defending track champion Pat Mintey Jr. of Quartz Hill has vowed not to return to the one-third of a mile oval.
Things heated up following the 30-lap feature race won by Sean Woodside of Saugus over a controversial pass on the 14th lap.
“I’m not coming back,” said Mintey, who led Woodside by 15 points before the race. “We’ll find somewhere else to race.”
Mintey lost the lead to Woodside after the two made contact coming out of turn two. Mintey finished seventh and was upset that Woodside was not penalized.
Woodside had a different view.
“I got underneath him once before . . . that’s what this is from,” Woodside said, pointing to a black mark on the front spoiler of his car. “I got under him again and he tried to cut down on me and he lost it.”
Woodside held off a strong challenge from former champion Gary Sigman of Carson to register his second victory and eighth top five finish in 10 starts this season.
