MISSION VIEJO — Sandy Zubrin of Newport Beach will defend her title in the Southern California Diving Invitational, beginning today at the Marguerite Swimming and Diving Complex.
Zubrin, 17, a senior at Corona del Mar High who was this year’s Division II Southern Section diving champion, is a heavy favorite to repeat her victory in the women’s one- and three-meter diving and platform overall competition. Zubrin recently returned from competition in China, where she was third in platform at the Four Nations Meet in Tianjin, and 11th in the platform at the China Open.
In addition to Zubrin, local favorites Summer Brown, Tyce Routson and 12-year-old Erica Sorgi, who set four meet records last year, also will compete with more than 300 divers in the four-day meet. The Southern California Diving Invitational is the last important meet before the U.S. world team trials, July 14 in St. Louis.
Competition begins at 9 a.m. with one- and three-meter diving. Senior competition starts at 9 a.m. Sunday.
