LOS ANGELES : Deputy Gets Probation for Sex With Inmate

A former sheriff’s deputy who admitted having sex with a woman prisoner at a courthouse has been sentenced to community service rather than jail time.
Larry Wayne Fraize, 43, was ordered this week to perform 200 hours of community service and serve three years felony probation. He must also pay a $900 fine. Superior Court Judge Judy Champagne said a 180-day jail sentence would be imposed if Fraize violates his probation.
After Fraize waved his right to a jury trial, he was found guilty of two counts of oral copulation. “It’s an appropriate punishment,” Deputy Dist. Atty. Alan Yochelson said. “We were not able to demonstrate that Fraize used force or coercion.”
In May, 1993, Fraize was arrested after he was caught on a surveillance videotape receiving oral sex from a female inmate in a holding tank at the Van Nuys court. A 10-minute portion of the tape also showed the inmate engaging in sex with another female prisoner while Fraize watched.
The woman told investigators that she was not forced to have sex.
Fraize’s lawyer, Paul Kinion, plans to appeal the conviction.
