Judy McCarron and daughters Erin, Stephanie and Kristin showed up in the nick of time at Hollywood Park on Sunday.

Within two victories of 6,000 when the afternoon began, Chris McCarron had no luck with his first two mounts, finishing last on favored Magic Alpha in the third race and a distant third on Just Tops in the fifth.

Before the seventh, McCarron’s family arrived and gave him a lucky charm--one of three Chinese coins horse owner Raymond Rosen had given the jockey some time ago.

McCarron wrapped the coin around his right wrist and went out and won on favored Fantastic Kim.

Then in the $162,400 Milady Handicap, McCarron, 39, reached No. 6,000 in style by winning on Andestine.

Bouncing back after his five-race winning streak ended in the Hawthorne Handicap on May 29, Andestine held off Golden Klair to win the Grade I race by a neck in 1:41 2/5 for the 1 1/16 miles.

Rosen had given the jockey the lucky coins after an earlier victory by Andestine.

“My daughters had been wearing them around their necks as little necklaces and (Judy McCarron) said I should wear one of those lucky coins out there today, so I said, ‘Well, let’s give it a try.’ Maybe I should have put it on before going to bed (Saturday night), but they didn’t get here until right before the seventh race.”

McCarron, who won four races Saturday, isn’t the youngest rider to reach 6,000. Laffit Pincay, who is second on the all-time list behind Bill Shoemaker, was 38 when he did so in 1985. Shoemaker, like McCarron, was 39.

“It means a great deal,” McCarron said. “I’m very proud of the fact I’m now in a group with the likes of Laffit, Shoe and Pat Day. It’s a great feeling. It’s really hard to put into words.”

The beaten favorite in the Hawthorne, Andestine, who is trained by David Hofmans, was close to the sizzling pace set by 16-1 shot Zarani Sidi Anna (22 1/5, 44 4/5 and 1:09 1/5 for six furlongs), drew clear in the stretch, then held off the late charge of Golden Klair.

“She’s very good right now,” Hofmans said. “She did everything right today and schooled very well in the paddock. We had to leave the paddock a little bit early because she’s a nervous-type filly and she needs a little extra special care.

“We asked permission and (the stewards) let us go out early and that really helped her.”

The Wicked North, Arcangues, Del Mar Dennis and Slew Of Damascus are the only definite starters for the $750,000 Hollywood Gold Cup.

Unhappy with the 116 pounds Kingdom Found was assigned for the 1 1/4-mile race, trainer Gary Jones and owner Ray Dilbeck have decided to ship the Californian’s runner-up to Belmont Park for the $350,000 Suburban Handicap on July 4.

“The only way he’ll stay here and run in the Gold Cup is (if) I can’t secure what I consider smooth airline connections to New York,” Jones said. “But we think we’ve got a good reservation on a Wednesday flight.”

Bien Bien will stick to the grass and will probably return in the $250,000 Sunset Handicap on July 24.
