NEWBURY PARK : District OKs Program for Troubled Students
Troubled students in the Conejo Valley will soon be able to make up failed or missed credits through an intensive new program on the Newbury Park High School campus.
Conejo Valley Unified School District board members this week unanimously approved a school-within-a-school program designed to help struggling teen-agers re-enter traditional classrooms and graduate with their peers.
The program still needs review by the state Board of Education, but district officials hope to gain swift approval and launch the mini-high school this fall.
“It will be up and running,” Assistant Supt. Richard Simpson said. “Maybe not the first day, but by the fall.”
The new program will essentially create a second continuation school in the Conejo Valley district, serving 25 students at a time with counseling and a low student-teacher ratio. The existing continuation school, known as Conejo Valley High School, serves about 250 students.
