Santa Barbara Escape

A weekend at one of Santa Barbara’s bed and breakfast inns is indeed a restoring experience, particularly for the harried big-city dweller, although Robin Greene (“Victorian Charmer, Xlnt Location,” May 29) seems more concerned with room size, wine vintage and almost trivial cost differences. But, I won’t dismiss her remarks as she dismisses her husband while she dresses for dinner. I’ll just suggest Ms. Greene visit Santa Barbara next time for the restoring effect of leisurely walks, beach cycling, quiet gardens and spectacular sunsets.

I am often uncomfortable with the “Budget for Two” (that accompany “Weekend Escape” articles). They should be called “Not-Budgetwise for the Rich and Indulged.” For the trip to Santa Barbara, the cost was $499.52.
My wife and I recently spent three days and two nights in Santa Barbara. We drove in our VW van, stayed in one of the two in-town RV parks. We had a great time. Our budget: camp, two nights, $50; Be Bop Burger, dinner and lunch, $19.19; Red Robin Restaurant, dinner, $15; ice cream cones, $1.90; movie, $7; parking, $1.50; Burger King, lunch, $5.50; breakfast muffins and snacks we brought, $7; museums, $5; gasoline, $15. Total: $127.09.
Now how about some articles on real “Budgetwise Trips for Two,” where people like us can have great times on sensible budgets?
