Rockwell May Unload Unit: The defense contractor said it may sell, spin off or strategically link its Switching Systems division with another company to maintain its leadership in telephone call processing. Switching Systems, based in Downers Grove, Ill., pioneered technology used by companies such as airlines, home shopping networks and financial institutions to handle a large number of incoming or outgoing calls. Rockwell said it has hired Dillon, Read & Co. to help it evaluate alternatives to ensure the unit’s dominance in the rapidly evolving call center market, while providing maximum shareholder value. A spokeswoman said a sale or strategic alliance would probably involve telecommunications and information companies.
