JERUSALEM — Israel on Wednesday freed two West Bank Palestinians jailed for nearly the entire 27 years of Israeli occupation, Palestinians said.
Hundreds of Palestinians turned out in the city of Nablus to welcome Taj Deen Husseini, 55, and Issa Qaisi, 68. Both had been serving life sentences.
The two were among the first guerrillas of Palestine Liberation Organization Chairman Yasser Arafat’s Fatah movement to be arrested after Israel captured the West Bank from Jordan in the 1967 Middle East War.
Qaisi was convicted of killing a Palestinian suspected of serving as an informer for Israel. Husseini was convicted of illegal possession of weapons.
