PREP GOLF / CITY CHAMPIONSHIP : Angel Cruises, Granada Hills Wins Again
Darren Angel of Granada Hills High decided to hold nothing back on the final hole of the City Section golf championships.
Angel tried to drive the green on the 350-yard par four and came up just short. Other than that, precious little went wrong.
Angel shot his second consecutive three-under 69 Thursday at Knollwood Country Club in Granada Hills to win the individual title by 10 shots.
By the time he teed off at No. 18, the title was won. So why not let her rip?
“I had to do it,” said Angel, grinning. “I’ve driven (the green) before.”
He has been in the winner’s circle before too. Last year, as a sophomore, he won the individual crown and led Granada Hills to the team title. The Highlanders won the title again with a five-man total of 804, edging Grant by two shots.
Angel’s score could have been even better--he missed a half-dozen putts from 12 feet or less. Angel, the L.A. City junior champion, set the course record at Knollwood two months ago with a 63.
Scott Golditch of Taft shot 73 to finish second individually at 148.
