IRVINE — Sandy Zubrin of Corona del Mar calmly won her third consecutive Southern Section Championship Friday at Heritage Park.
Showing little emotion, except for a small grin, Zubrin, 17, scored 529.25, never scoring lower than a 6. On her sixth-round dive, a reverse pike, she drew three 9s and followed with an inward pike that earned four 8.5s.
Even with Zubrin’s impressive performance, second-place Laura Segundo of Arcadia finished only 21 points behind.
“The scores were really close this year,” said Zubrin, winner of the 1993 Summer Nationals. “This year’s competition was better than in the past.”
Only 40 points separated third-place Erin McGinty (485.95), a junior from Santa Margarita, and teammate Caroline Kelley (445.40) in seventh.
Sonora’s Aaron Jenkins won the boys’ event with 464.45, 66 points ahead of second-place Peter Kransz of Sunny Hills. Jenkins led from the beginning, scoring 6.5-7.5 on his first dive, a forward pike.
Four Sonora boys finished among the top eight. Jason Jass (397.20) finished third, Larry Neberman (363.20) sixth and Jeff Stewart (355.75) eighth. Troy’s Derek Mittenzwei was fourth (386.00).
