Nation IN BRIEF : NEW HAMPSHIRE : Dartmouth Trustees Vote to Keep ROTC
Dartmouth College’s Board of Trustees voted to keep Army ROTC but said it will pressure the federal government to change its policies discriminating against gays. “The policy forces Dartmouth, as well as other colleges and universities, to make an unconscionable choice as to which students they wish to disadvantage,” the board said in a statement. Under the “don’t ask, don’t tell, don’t pursue” policy enacted last year, military officials cannot question men and women about their sexual orientation but can kick out a person who is openly homosexual. The policy runs counter to Dartmouth’s equal opportunity policies, the board said. The school said it might join court cases challenging the homosexual ban and might try to pressure the White House, Congress and military leaders.
