ROUNDUP : Jones Powers CSUN to Sweeep in Softball
Shannon Jones hit two home runs and drove in five runs to lift the Cal State Northridge softball team to 4-3 and 10-0 victories in a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday at Northridge.
The senior third baseman had a grand slam and two doubles in the second game. Jones has hit five home runs in her last 10 at-bats.
Northridge (35-6, 10-2 in conference play) built a 4-0 third-inning lead and held off a late San Diego State rally in the first game. In the second game, Terri Pearson was three for three for the Matadors, who pounded out 11 hits against the Aztecs (18-18-1, 1-8-1).
COLLEGE BASEBALL
Mission 9-13, East L.A. 7-14--Dave Valdez belted a two-run home run in the sixth, giving Mission (21-14, 12-7) the lead for good in the first game of a Southern California Athletic Conference doubleheader.
Valdez finished the day six for nine with seven runs and four RBIs.
Gary Mathews of Mission was four for seven with six RBIs.
Oxnard 10, Santa Barbara 3--Jess Olivares had four hits and three RBIs for Oxnard in a Western State Conference game at Cabrillo Park. Ray Franco had two hits and three RBIs and Ryan Glass added an RBI double.
Canyons 7, Santa Monica 5--Ari Jacobs had two hits with one run batted in and Scott Minkler added a two-run home run for Canyons (12-15, 8-9) in a WSC game.
Moorpark 10, Ventura 6--Sean Mitchell went two for three with three RBIs, lifting Moorpark (15-13-1, 9-7-1) to a WSC victory. Wayne Northern and Kim Cote each had three hits.
College of the Desert 13, Antelope Valley 5--Jack Cox and Tom King each homered for Antelope Valley (11-13, 5-10) in a Foothill Conference game.
HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL
Hueneme 5-4, Arroyo Grande 4-5--Art Bolen singled to drive in Jess Sanchez with the go-ahead run in the seventh inning of the first nonleague game for Hueneme (9-9). Robert Ruiz homered.
Alemany 14, Harvard-Westlake 6--Jon Tucker drove in three runs for Alemany (13-6, 4-2) in a Mission League game.
Chaminade 6, St. Bernard 1--Gabe Crecion pitched six strong innings and hit a three-run home run as Chaminade won a Mission League game. Kevin Lohman and Casey Cote each had two hits for the Eagles (11-6, 3-3), who have won seven of eight.
Bishop Montgomery 5, Notre Dame 3--Chris Crowley and Robbie Brewster each had two hits but Notre Dame (11-4, 5-1) fell in a Mission League game.
St. Bonaventure 8, Bishop Diego 4--Jake Brown went three for four with two RBIs to lead the Seraphs (3-3, 7-7) to a Tri-Valley League win.
Montclair Prep 11, Webb 5--Jerrod Sandler had three hits and Matt Muller had two hits for the Mounties (12-4) in a nonleague game. Muller has hits in eight straight at-bats.
