Truck Driver Is Beaten Unconscious After Crossing Teamsters Picket Line
A 55-year-old truck driver was beaten unconscious after driving through a picket line in Pico Rivera, where striking Teamsters protested the hiring of part-time employees, Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies said Saturday.
Glen Yeatts of Santa Monica was attacked at a stoplight on Telegraph Road after breaking a line of pickets at ABF freight yard, about 4:30 p.m. Friday, deputies said. Yeatts is listed in serious but stable condition at Downey Community Hospital, according to deputies.
Deputies said Jesus Acuna, 37, allegedly chased the truck to a stoplight at Paramount Boulevard and removed a linchpin that connected the trailer to the rig. When Yeatts drove away, the trailer fell on the truck’s rear wheels. Yeatts got out and was beaten unconscious with a pipe and a rock.
Acuna surrendered to deputies at the Pico Rivera station and was booked for attempted murder, deputies said. The Teamsters went on strike April 5 against 22 major trucking companies after both sides failed to agree on a labor contract for nearly 80,000 workers.
