TUXTLA GUTIERREZ, Mexico — A band of gunmen assaulted a military roadblock near the Chiapas state capital of Tuxtla Gutierrez Friday and one soldier died in the hourlong shootout, Mexico’s defense ministry said.
It was not known if the attackers, who fled into the surrounding hills, suffered any casualties, the ministry said in a statement.
A government official who asked not to be identified described the incident as “very minor and isolated” and said there was no indication that the Zapatista National Liberation Army was involved.
