Dinner, Auction to Raise Funds for Amerasian Services
SANTA ANA — The Amerasian Program at St. Anselm’s Cross Cultural Community Center will hold a fund-raiser Friday to benefit children who were born to American fathers and Vietnamese mothers during the Vietnam War.
The program offers services to children who grew up fatherless in a patrilineal society in Vietnam, where they often became victims of cultural shame and social harassment.
It tries to help educate and instill a sense of self-esteem in Amerasians by providing mentors, English training, job assistance, health classes and advocacy of women’s issues, and it also helps in searches for fathers of Amerasians.
Officials said the program is in jeopardy because of dwindling funds, and they hope the fund-raiser will help keep it in operation.
The center will sponsor the “Amerasians In Search of a Brighter Future in America,” a dinner that will feature a silent auction, an art exhibition and musical entertainment. The event will begin at 7 p.m. at Lucky House Restaurant, 2158 South Bristol St. in Santa Ana. The Amerasian Program will accept tax-deductible donations.
