Coach: Mike Jagd (15th year).
1993: 12-8, 6-4 in the South Coast League. Lost in Division I first round to Laguna Beach.
Key returners: Jeremy Beck, 6-3, middle blocker, Sr.; Chris Jacobson, 6-9, middle blocker, Sr.; Ryan Mariano, 6-3, outside hitter, Sr.; Todd Steinert, 6-3, setter, Sr.; Doug Thompson, 6-5, outside hitter, Sr.
Key newcomers: Bill Coblenz, 6-0, left-side hitter, Jr.; Arjuno Soriano, 5-8, setter, Jr.
Outlook: All-league players Mariano and Steinert lead a talented group of returners, giving Jagd reason to be excited about this season. Mariano is a dynamic hitter who could be the best the school has produced, Jagd said, and Steinert is a cool-under-pressure leader. Jacobson, who is being recruited by Pepperdine and UCLA among others, and Beck give the Chargers a solid middle, and Thompson, Coblenz, and Soriano add to El Toro’s depth. “I’ve never had this many guys who can really play,” Jagd said. “I look forward to our practices . . . it should be a fun year.”
