What If There Were No Mothers?

In class at Barnard College five years ago, my daughter was defending an unpopular cause--motherhood. So unworthy are we mothers, it seemed, that her professor sneered his ultimate insult: She probably wanted to grow up to be “just like her mother.”
“The Trials of Lawyer Moms” (Feb. 21) was an intelligent article on a group of Washington lawyer-mothers who described some of the trials of juggling two full-time careers. Yet even this sympathetic piece said that joining the group “eased the stigma of going from legal eagle to mommy hen.”
I am so tired of hearing mothers referred to as second-class citizens. Has anyone made it into this world without one?
