A Costa Mesa man was killed early Friday morning when the truck he was driving slammed into a tree, police said.
Jeffrey Alan Carter, 39, was headed south in a pickup truck on Harbor Boulevard about 1 a.m., traveling at more than 60 miles an hour, police said.
At Harbor Boulevard and South Coast Drive, his car straddled a center divider for about 200 feet before hitting a 30-foot-tall pine tree head-on, police said.
Carter died instantly from blunt force trauma to the upper torso, police said.
Carter was not wearing a seat belt, and according to a police report, it appeared that alcohol was present in the car. An autopsy will determine whether he was driving under the influence of alcohol, police said.
